The Role
The Electronics Functional Safety Engineer (FSE) is a critical design and development role within the Advanced Battery Core Electronics Team. This position is responsible for leading the functional safety development of electronic hardware within Battery Management Systems (BMS) for next-generation lithium-ion battery platforms.
In this role, you will help design and validate safety-critical electronic systems that directly impact battery performance, reliability, and compliance with automotive safety standards. You will collaborate across systems, software, mechanical, safety, and production engineering teams to develop innovative, cost-effective, and functionally safe battery solutions from concept through production.
What You’ll Do (Impact Areas)
Functional Safety Engineering
- Lead the execution of hardware functional safety activities in accordance with ISO 26262 Part 5 and related standards.
- Develop and maintain hardware safety requirements, technical safety concepts, and safety architectures for low- and high-voltage battery systems.
- Perform ASIL decomposition, common cause analysis, and hardware safety analyses.
- Support Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF) activities where applicable.
Safety Analysis & Verification
- Conduct qualitative and quantitative safety analyses, including:
- HARA
- FMEA
- FMEDA
- Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- Common-mode and reliability analyses
- Define and execute hardware verification and validation (V&V) strategies, plans, and test methods.
- Develop Functional Safety portions of DVP&R and system-level validation activities.
- Lead peer reviews, confirmation reviews, and technical assessments of safety work products.
Hardware & Systems Development
- Define electronic hardware requirements and specifications for BMS products.
- Support implementation of hardware safety design best practices throughout the product lifecycle.
- Collaborate closely with systems, software, and hardware engineering teams to ensure functional safety compliance is integrated into product development.
- Contribute to the development of safety-critical electronic architectures from concept through production launch.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Program Execution
- Partner with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver robust, high-quality products on schedule and within budget.
- Collaborate with Systems Safety Teams to align functional and technical safety requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to functional safety processes, tools, and methodologies.
- Communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to stakeholders across the organization.

What You Bring (Qualifications)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical degree.
- 6+ years of professional experience in electronics functional safety engineering.
- Detailed training and hands-on experience with ISO 26262 Functional Safety Engineering.
- Experience developing Functional Safety work products in accordance with ISO 26262.
- Strong experience performing:
- HARA
- FMEA
- FMEDA
- Fault Tree Analysis
- Common Cause Analysis
- Experience with ASPICE processes and methodologies.
- Proficiency with engineering and requirements management tools such as:
- JAMA
- JIRA
- GitHub
- Cameo Systems Modeler
- Medini Analyze / Reliability Workbench
- Experience with SYSML and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
- Experience with Li-Ion battery systems and Battery Management Systems (BMS).
- Proficiency with electronic schematic capture, PCB layout, and simulation tools (e.g., Altium).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional engineering teams with minimal supervision.
- Experience taking safety-critical electronic architectures from concept through production.
Preferred Qualifications
- TÜV Functional Safety Certified Automotive Engineer.
- Experience in automotive product development and qualification processes.
- Experience with Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF).
- Experience with safety-critical embedded control systems.
